Rhino Horn Trimming

Rhinos are in a survival battle against humans due to their horns. Their horns are made out of Keratin, the same as our nails. In some cultures it is believed that their horns treat various illnesses when ground up in a powder or made into a pill. Because of this Rhinos have been hunted to near extinction and drastic measures are having to be made to protect our remaining Rhinos from certain death. One of those measures is horn trimming. A dedicated team consisting of vets, vet assistants, and a helicopter pilot conduct a seamless choreography to trim the Rhino's horns in less than 20 minutes. With the goal of causing minimum stress and no pain. While the Rhino's horns are being trimmed, blood work is also conducted and verification is done to ensure the Rhino is in the database. This data is important as it is extra security and aids in the fight against poachers.

While there is still a big battle ahead for the lives of the rhinos, there are promising stories. With work being done in Kenya with a successful embryo transfer to Uganda going from zero rhinos to a breeding program that has brought 38 Rhinos into the world. These Rhinos are currently located in a sanctuary with plans for them to be reintroduced to a national park.

There is hope for Rhinos as long as us, humans, can keep their story alive. We are their voice in this fight.
